Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

There are many reasons a tooth extraction may be required, including (but not limited to):

  • Severe Tooth Decay
  • The extraction of teeth for orthodontic treatment
  • Crowding
  • Fractured or broken teeth

However, tooth extraction may not be your only option. If you’re experiencing tooth pain, we may still be able to provide you with quick relief while saving your tooth in the process. But early detection is crucial.

Let us know if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
  • Severe tooth pain.
  • Pain that worsens with pressure or chewing.
  • Jaw pain or stiffness.
  • Swollen gums around the tooth or teeth.
  • Signs of gum disease such as discolouration, bleeding or a bad odour.

What to Expect at an Extraction Appointment

When you come in for a tooth extraction, our dentist or oral surgeon will guide you through the entire process in just one appointment. Here’s a quick rundown of the steps involved, from assessing if a tooth extraction is necessary for your dental well-being, to the actual removal, and finally, to your aftercare:

Exam & Evaluation

Our dental team will first thoroughly evaluate your symptoms and go over all possible options with you. Together, we’ll decide on the best way to promote the long-term health of your teeth.

Extraction

To ensure your comfort, we’ll administer a local anesthetic to numb the area where the tooth will be taken out. For those who need it, sedation options are also available. Using state-of-the-art, minimally invasive techniques, our oral surgeons aim to make the extraction as smooth and gentle as possible. Your well-being and a speedy recovery are our foremost concerns.

Aftercare & Recovery

After the procedure, we’ll provide you with detailed aftercare guidelines. These will cover: How to look after your mouth during the healing process, What to anticipate as you recover and Steps to take if you encounter any issues.

Cost Of A Dental Extraction In Newcastle

The cost of tooth extraction can vary depending on several factors, such as the complexity of the extraction, the location of the tooth, and whether sedation or other specialized equipment is required. With a typical insurance plan, the out-of-pocket cost for a tooth extraction is typically around $100 to $200 or more. If you don’t have insurance, the cost can range from $200 to $600.

No dental practice can give you an accurate quote over the phone because your treatment plan must be tailored to your specific needs and can only be determined after an oral exam. There are two broad

Simple Tooth Extraction

A simple tooth extraction is typically performed on teeth that are visible in the mouth and can be done by a general dentist using local anesthesia. Since this type of extraction is straightforward and doesn’t involve any complications, it usually costs less than more complex extractions.

Surgical Tooth Extraction

A surgical tooth extraction is a more complex procedure than a simple extraction and typically requires the expertise of an oral surgeon at a dental surgery center. This type of extraction is necessary when a tooth cannot easily be seen or reached, such as when it has not fully erupted or has broken off at the gum line. Due to the delicate care and expertise required for this procedure, it usually comes at a higher cost than a simple tooth extraction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tooth extraction may be necessary for a variety of reasons, including severe decay or damage, infection, crowding, or as part of orthodontic treatment. Your dentist or oral surgeon can help you determine if extraction is the best option for your situation.

Recovery time varies depending on the complexity of the extraction and your individual healing process, but most people can expect to feel back to normal within a week or two.

You may experience some swelling and discomfort after the procedure, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and ice packs. We will provide you with specific aftercare instructions to promote healing and minimize the risk of complications.

Soft foods are generally recommended for the first few days to avoid irritating the surgical site. Think yogurt, pudding, mashed potatoes, and soups. Gradually reintroduce harder foods as you feel comfortable.

Most patients can return to work or school within a day or two, depending on the complexity of the extraction and individual pain tolerance. It’s advisable to consult with your dentist for personalized guidance.

Everyone was very friendly and helpful! The hygienist communicated very well with me during the cleaning and exams which made me feel a lot more comfortable than I have at previous dentists. Both the hygienist and dentist were very transparent throughout the visit and I know they will continue to support me in discovering the best next steps for my oral health. As someone who is often nervous about dentists visits, this is possibly the best one I have had!

I had a great experience at Newcastle Dental! From the moment I walked in everyone was so kind and welcoming. The hygienist’s and dentist were super friendly, well informed and nice. They gave me great advice with multiple options when I asked how I can fix certain parts of my smile - they took into consideration costs and my needs. Looking forward to my return!

Upon my arrival I was greeted kindly into a fairly calm setting. The assistants and doctor were very personable and even explained everything prior to treatment. 8 was so pleased with the service, and also been advised there was a more concerning tooth to be attended too. I might not look forward to seeing a dentist, but this local has made me feel that much more at ease about going in the first place. Top notch!
